War Pony manager Jimmy Venable is the only OILer to win back-to-back championships. He won the AFC in 2014 and 2015, beating Hillier and Roe in the Thunder Bowl.
2015 AFC and overall OIL champion War Pony now has a custom mini-helmet to add to his two championship jerseys. As always, this fantastic helmet was manufactured by HelmetNation, LLC. And, while we're showing off new helmets, proper custom helmets for Lucky Enuf and SoonerJack arrived today as well. Check them out on their team pages. And you can view all the previous championship jerseys and helmets here.
The 2015 championship jerseys have arrived, and they look fantastic. As always, Earl at Hopco Sports did a great job. Congratulations to three-time champion Jack Bruesch, two-time champion Jimmy Venable, and first-year champion Zack Brake. You can check out all 13 championship jerseys here.
The second annual Liberty Bowl pits the AFC vs. the PFC. When the OIL expanded to a third conference, something had to change regarding the Week 17 Liberty Bowl. We could either pit all three teams against each other, or we could use Week 16 as a semifinal matchup: the two highest-scoring teams would advance. That's what we chose. I have to admit that I don't like excluding a three-time champion in the NFC's SoonerJack, but rules are rules.
So the Liberty Bowl will pit the AFC champion War Pony versus the PFC champion Boomtown Brawlers. The winner will get their name engraved on the Tenequer Memorial Trophy as well as a custom mini-helmet made by Helmet Nation, LLC. Good luck, men.
KENT, WASHINGTON — War Pony held on to beat the Rebel Alliance Monday night to win its second straight Thunder Bowl. The back-to-back championship are an OIL record. Congratulations to Jimmy Venable for retaining the Killman Memorial Trophy for one more season.
This is the ninth installment in our ongoing oral history project. You can read previous chapters here.
2014 was a big year. Alpha and Bravo Battery deployed again, this time to Afghanistan. The OIL joined the Yardbarker Network. Two longtime rivals chronicled their rivalry in an oral history. The league, fresh off losing a SECFOR brother, added 14 new teams as the league moved to a conference model. Cliburn spearheaded an oral history project to document the year in Iraq the men shared, and the men lost another brother-in-arms.
The OIL Heads to Afghanistan
ROGERS: This was my fifth season in the OIL, but it was my first deployment. I was in the 158 before their 2006 deployment and re-joined later. I wasn't sure how well I'd do competing from overseas, but I knew everyone else in the league had done it at some point.
ZERGER: This was my first year in the league and my first and only time in Afghanistan (although I'd been to Iraq twice). It brought back a lot of memories seeing familiar names that I hadn't necessarily forgotten but hadn't talked to in a while. I do believe that systems such as our league keep veterans in touch and might help some of our brothers reach out if they need help or something.
Chronicling a Rivalry
The championship jerseys arrived today for the Dirty Hippies and War Pony. The winner of each conference receives a custom jersey based on their uniform design. The jerseys are produced by HopcoSports.com and include full sublimation and sewn-on tackle twill numbers and logos.
It's finally here: the Super Bowl. Enjoy it. Here is a printable list of all the prop bets Vegas is offering on the game. It makes a good addition to any Super Bowl party.
Expansion Team Names Ideas
If our 10-year reunion/draft party goes as planned, I expect to get inquiries about how to join the OIL. If we get enough, we can expand to another conference. If that happens, we'll need 14 more unique franchise names and logos. I've started compiling ideas here: www.okiraqi.org/expansion
Let me know if you have any ideas.
NFC and Overall OIL Champion Chris Trovillo has received the Harrington Trophy and Tenequer Memorial Trophy. And AFC Champion Jimmy Venable should receive the Killman Memorial Trophy this week. Additionally, each manager should receive his championship jersey in the next two weeks. We'll post updates when they arrive.
Enjoy the big game!
