The managers for the 2008 and 2011 champion SoonerJack and 2013 champion Dogs of War will soon receive their championship mini-helmets. The final piece to the helmet puzzle is the 2009 champion ThroatPunchers, who finished in second place the following season before leaving the league to commish the MGL full-time (opening up a spot for Yancy Baldwin).
Brake spent 2006 at Camp Liberty with Jimmy Mitchell in SSG Taylor's squad. Since then, he's worked in various position in the oil and gas industry, including supervising a yard in the boomtowns of North Dakota. Fittingly, his franchise is named the Boomtown Brawlers. His logo is inspired by the HBO series Deadwood and the movie There Will Be Blood. His team colors are dark brown, light brown, and vegas gold. No other OIL franchise uses those colors. Brake now lives in Chickasha with his wife. He'll be a great addition to the OIL.
Jimmy Mitchell has reserved a spot in the OIL when it expands to a third conference. He's chosen the name Nightmares for his OIL franchise. Mitchell spent the 2006 SECFOR mission at Camp Liberty with the bulk of the 158. He was a member of SSG Taylor's squad along with Brake (manager of the PFC's Boomtown Brawlers). His Nightmares franchise is inspired by the cult-classic horror films of the 1980s. They boast a menacing look of red, black, and gray. No other OIL franchise uses that color scheme in same way, although Henderson and Morgan come close.
The championship jerseys arrived today for the Dirty Hippies and War Pony. The winner of each conference receives a custom jersey based on their uniform design. The jerseys are produced by HopcoSports.com and include full sublimation and sewn-on tackle twill numbers and logos.
Welcome Nate Cordes to the OIL. He has reserved a spot in the league and will compete as the SECFOR Sixers when the league next expands. He was in Bravo Battery and went to Iraq in 2005 as a member of First Platoon. He spent that year at Camp Echo in Diwaniyah with current OIL members Jessen and Lynn.
We spent 2006 in Iraq as part of the SECFOR mission. The Sixers name is a classic tribute to that year. The chevrons in the logo harken to our military heritage and create the "MM" of the Roman numeral for "2006": MMVI. The focus of the logo is the second half of the Roman numeral: VI. The colors are inspired by the U.S. Army dress blue uniform. No other OIL franchise uses that color scheme.
The OIL now hosts a growing database of veterans resources. Our resources page includes links to benefits, services, and programs for disability, employment, housing, and legal issues. Please let us know if there are categories or services we should add.
It's finally here: the Super Bowl. Enjoy it. Here is a printable list of all the prop bets Vegas is offering on the game. It makes a good addition to any Super Bowl party.
Expansion Team Names Ideas
If our 10-year reunion/draft party goes as planned, I expect to get inquiries about how to join the OIL. If we get enough, we can expand to another conference. If that happens, we'll need 14 more unique franchise names and logos. I've started compiling ideas here: www.okiraqi.org/expansion
Let me know if you have any ideas.
NFC and Overall OIL Champion Chris Trovillo has received the Harrington Trophy and Tenequer Memorial Trophy. And AFC Champion Jimmy Venable should receive the Killman Memorial Trophy this week. Additionally, each manager should receive his championship jersey in the next two weeks. We'll post updates when they arrive.
Enjoy the big game!
