Zerger spent the 2006 and 2008 seasons in Iraq with the 158. And he spent the 2014 season in Afghanistan, where he clinched a playoff spot in his first year in the OIL. His team name refers to the nickname given to field artillery soldiers. His logo is inspired by the 45th Infantry's Thunderbird, as the 45th FIRES Brigade was originally a part of the 45th Infantry.
In 2016, he won his first OIL championship after setting a record for most points in a season. And, in 2017, Zerger became the second OILer to win back-to-back championships. He lives in Amarillo with his wife and daughters.
