Here's what Mr. Good had to say about his design:
"I tried to keep the design intentionally simple. It wouldn't make much sense, to me, for a team called the Roughnecks to wear a uniform filled with bright colors, chrome and gradients. I aimed for a classic design which would be as much at home in the 50's as it is today. 

It all started with the logo. In researching roughnecks, I came across a striking photograph by Lewis Hines called "Power house mechanic working on steam pump." The image seems a perfect balance between muscle, machine and dirt. The Roughnecks logo in my design draws heavily from this photo. 

The wordmark, in turn, is informed by the logo, with "OKC" echoing the wrench shape from the logo. The typography (though perhaps to lesser effect) also uses hexagonal cutouts to echo the wrench shape." 

I like the concept of the logo. The Roughneck looks a little cartoony though. I think Good could move forward with this idea and create a good logo with a more abstract image of a roughneck working a big wrench. Now, to the colors: 
"The color scheme came last. I knew the Roughnecks colors had to echo manual labor. I'd originally tried using black (oil), brown (dirt) and yellow (hard hats), but this ended up looking like Pittsburgh. As a Browns fan, this made me want to vomit. I landed on he final green/brown/grey color scheme by thinking of football playing roughneck; after 4 quarters in the trenches, they'd be covered in mud (brown) and grass stains (green). The addition of grey is meant to make one think of the machines roughnecks work with every day.

I found it liberating to design a team called "The Roughnecks." The phrase is abstract enough to allow for artistic freedom. Designing a team called "the Eagles," or for example, would force me into drawing birds, beaks and wings. Roughnecks, on the other hand, could have be an animal. It could be heavy machinery. I just happened to stumble on Hines' photo and it set the imagery in my mind: a man with a wrench."
I am not a fan of the green, but I like the idea behind it. The hue of green doesn't look right, though. Although I hate the Eagles' "midnight green," a darker green may be appropriate for a team in Oklahoma. I love the Eagles in kelly green, but I don't like it here. Personally, I like the brown, black, and yellow idea, but I understand the hesitation if you're a poor Browns fan.
